NinoxDrone2: apply to fly near an airport

A short guide to Avinor’s app for getting permission within 5 km of an airport.

How to apply for a flight in NinoxDrone2

Applies to the 5 km zone around airports. NinoxDrone2 is Avinor’s app for applying for permission to fly within 5 km of the 17 airports shown in the app. The steps are a short summary of Avinor’s own pages. Text in quotation marks is quoted word for word from Avinor. This portal is not official. Check dronesoner.no and NinoxDrone2 yourself.

“If you are within 5 km of an airport, you must apply for permission to fly. You cannot fly until the control tower has approved your request to take off. If the control tower is closed, you are not allowed to fly within 5 km of the airport.”

Avinor, questions and answers about NinoxDrone2
1Check whether you are inside the 5 km zone

The app shows the 5 km zone at 17 airports. Other restricted areas are not shown in NinoxDrone2, so also check dronesoner.no and NOTAMs. If the airport is not in the app, you will find contact details in Avinor’s drone map (Avinor: “The drone map also shows drone rules and contact details for all airports.”).

2Download the app or use the website

NinoxDrone2 is available in the App Store and on Google Play. Web version: utm.avinor.no/avm (“/avm must be included”).

3Install one authenticator app

Signing in requires Microsoft Authenticator, Google Authenticator or FreeOTP. Choose only one. The codes are valid for 30 seconds.

4Create an account and register as an operator

Private individuals register as an operator, not a pilot, and choose “natural person”. See the user guide, pages 1 to 10.

5Upload your certificate of competency as a screenshot

PDF files are not accepted. Avinor recommends a screenshot of the certificate from flydrone.no, not a photo taken with a camera.

6Add your drone

Profile, blue person icon, “operator account”, “assets”, “add drone”. The drone must always be marked with your operator ID.

7Submit a flight plan and wait for a reply

Yellow means the plan is waiting for the control tower. Blue means the plan is approved, but you must request “take off”. Only when the area turns green may you fly, and only within the area and time you applied for.

8Watch out for cancellations

A plan that breaks the rules, for example by flying too high, is cancelled automatically without notice. It is shown with a black border and under “cancelled plans”.

9Tap “end flight” when you have landed

The air traffic controller keeps the area closed to other traffic until you report back. Avinor: “So remember to report when you have landed!”

Outside the 5 km zone, registration is not required, but Avinor encourages it so that emergency services can see your flight.
